"In a second."
"But I want you to play with me RIGHT NOW."
"I SAID in a second, E. Can't you see Mommy's doing something right now?"
Pouting. Stomping off to room. Sound of rocking chair swinging back and forth, sound of pacifier being sucked on. Sound of Elmo's eyeballs hitting the wall behind the bed.
"NOW, Mommy? Now will you a play a game with me?"
"Two more minutes, sweetheart. I'm almost done."
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"I'm feeling sad."
"Why are you feeling sad, E?"
"Because you're playing a game without me. On your phone."
Pause.
"If you wanted to play by yourself, Mommy, you could have just said so. It's OK to play by ourselves sometimes."
Brave little face. Quavering lip.
"I just really wanted you to play with ME."
iPhone + Words with Friends + Game That Cannot be Won with Mother?

Total. Mom. Fail.
Sorry, little E. I'll play Scrabble on my phone another time. A time when I'm not stealing moments from you.
P.S. Do I get any bonus points back because I still play games with my own mom? Even if she KICKS MY ASS by 150 points? Just wondering...
Wow, that boy knows how to tug at your heartstrings...
ReplyDeleteWe've all been there, doing something we thought was fun or important, and told our children to wait.
I think I'd try inviting him to play beside me - if that doesn't do the trick, then I'd probably set a timer...when it goes off, he gets all of your attention.
I use the timer approach with my grandchildren - they aren't the most patient creatures, but they understand that the timer means ME time.
Aw. BTDT and I totally think you should get bonus points for playing WWF w/your Mom and losing. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat timer idea is brilliant. I may have to put that to use.
I'm sure those words and little facce cut right to your heart. It would have mine.
ReplyDeletehi from mamak's
Yeah, I get that too. "Mom, when you are done working on your computer, will you play a game?" and of course, Im not "working" I'm blogging, checking email, checking Twitter etc etc :P
ReplyDeleteSo, what's your Words With Friends name? I'm always looking for new opponents ;)
Oh my gosh! I have done that exact same thing. Only it's my Dad I can't beat. It drives me crazy! I have to watch my game/blogging/twitter time too so that I don't put my kids off.
ReplyDeleteI have been distracted by things and JDaniel loves to remind me that he needs a friend to play with.
ReplyDeleteOh me oh my - how they say just the "right" thing to remind you how much you love them....
